Hysteroscopic Surgeries

Hysteroscopic procedures are minimally invasive procedures that allow the physician to examine the inside of the uterus for diagnosing and treating diseases like abnormal bleeding which can be caused by many problems like polyps, cysts, tumors etc in the uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes etc. This is a minimally invasive procedure in which a special instrument called hysteroscope is inserted through the vagina. No incisions are needed in this procedure. These procedures are used for diagnostic purposes as well as operative purposes. Benefits of hysteroscopic surgeries The important advantage this type of surgeries is that no incisions are needed in such surgeries and as such there will be less blood loss, less pain and the recovery time and period of hospitalization will also be much lesser. In short patients who undergo hysteroscopic surgeries will be able to resume their normal activities at an earlier date that those who undergo open surgeries. Hysteroscopic procedure Hysteroscopic procedures can be conducted under general anesthesia, local anesthesia or regional anesthesia. The selection of the anesthesia is based on factors like general health condition and medical history of the patient and the surgery that the patient has to undergo. Inetially the surgeon dilates the cervix. Then inserts the hysteroscope through the vagina and pushes it gently till it reaches uterus. Through hysteroscope carbon dioxide gas is inserted to the uterus to expand it so that the surgeon gets more room for carrying out the surgery and to clear away any mucus formation inside the uterus. The light shown through this instrument allows the surgeon to see the uterus and the openings of the fallopian tubes into the uterus. Specialized surgical instruments are inserted through the hysteroscope and the surgery is done. The time taken for hysteroscopic procedures may vary from 5 minutes to 1 hour. The variation is time is based on the fact whether hysteroscopic or laparoscopic surgeries are also done along with diagnostic hysteroscopy or not. Hospital stay Hysteroscopy is a minor surgery and hence overnight stay will not be required. But if you have any problem with anesthesia your surgeon may require overnight stay in the hospital. Candidates for this procedure Eventhough hysteroscopic surgeries are very beneficial it is not suitable for every candidate. Consult a doctor who has specialized in this procedure and find out whether you are a suitable candidate for this procedure.
